LTTE confab in Geneva gets busy on the fifth day

The LTTE Constitutional Affairs Committee was kept busy today, 5th October 2004 in Geneva. An ICRC team of five delegates led by Reto Meister, Delegate General to Asia and the Pacific addressed the Constitutional Affairs Committee on the various aspects of ICRC's concern in a post conflict situation. The Committee briefed the delegation on the purpose of the confab.

In a separate meeting with Mr. S. P. Tamilselvan, Head of the LTTE Political Wing the ICRC delegation took time to assess humanitarian services including civilian protection that the ICRC is engaged in the war-torn areas. They assured that the ICRC will continue to extend its services in the NorthEast with specific reference to manning of the checkpoints and access to people in detention.

A team of human rights experts comprising of Loubna Freih, Geneva Director, Human Rights Watch, Nicholas Howen, Secretary General, International Commission of Jurists, Peter Splinter, Amnesty International and Rachel Brett, Rep. Human Rights and Refugees, Quaker United Nations office also met with the Committee and reiterated the necessity of the human rights component in any of the future steps aimed at resolving the national conflict. This team too had a separate meeting with Mr. S. P. Tamilselvan wherein the latter presented an overview of the current political situation.

These two teams availed of the opportunity to meet with the NorthEast Secretariat on Human Rights(NESOHR) and familiarized themselves with the concept and working of NESOHR. They also assured support in the initiative with counseling and expert advice. Ms. Karen Parker, Human Rights Lawyer also conducted a lengthy session to the benefit of NESOHR with special reference to the UN and Geneva conventions on human rights in a post conflict scenario.

The Constitutional Affairs Committee continues to sit in its deliberations in a wrapping up exercise.
