Navy men arrest people who collected firewood
Incident at Trincomalee
Navy men arrested some people who were collecting firewood in the woods near the Naval base in Trincomalee on Monday, the 29th of December 2003. The arrested people were fifteen in number and were handed over to the custody of the Thampalagamam Police. According to reports of the Naval Head Quarters, the fifteen persons under police custody are alleged to have trespassed and intruded the Naval premises. Subsequently some bullock carts were also found nearby the spot where the arrest took place. In the preliminary inquiries it was given to understand that the suspects had been to the woods only to collect firewood and the bullock carts were theirs.
The Navy men informed that the location of arrest fell within the area demarcated to be a High Security Zone and they had never admitted anybody in the past many years to collect firewood in the jungles and woods lying in the wide stretch of their High Security Zone. The Navy men saw the fifteen persons all of a sudden in the vicinity where they least expected and hence the sight instantly aroused their suspicion.
Incidentally the location of arrest happened to be close to the shipbuilding yard of the Navy and it aggravated their suspicion further.
