Blockade on cement and other building material hampering IDP work
The blockade imposed by the Sri Lanka Government on cement and other building material coming into Vanni is making the provision of facilities for the newly displacing people extremely difficult.
Digging wells and building toilets for the IDP settlements require cement. Lack of water and toilet facilities among a displacing population could create serious health hazards for the IDPs. People in the meantime continue to displace due to shelling by the Sri Lankan military directly into civilians settlements. Such displacement is presently taking place in the Vanni area from the north, south, west and east due to shelling from the Muhamalai, Vavuniya, Mannar and Manalaru camps of the Sri Lanka military respectively.
