The government should accept the ISGA proposals and pave the way for a final solution
-Union of Public Organizations
The emerging political situation in the country appears to cause concern whether war would resume, says the Vavuniya District Union of Public Organizations in a memorandum addressed to President Chandrika Kumaratunga and suggests that the government should once again peruse the proposal of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam for an Interim Self Governing Authority and grant it as an initial stage of a final settlement and pave the way for peace. The memorandum recounts to the President that it was with sincerity of purpose and sanity of thought the Liberation Tigers of TamilEelam and the Government of Sri Lanka reached good understanding and signed the MoU two and a half years ago in order to jointly resolve the conflict that has been for the past several years eroding and damaging the interests and the heritage of the country. And it was under this MoU and with the Ceasefire Agreement peace process was initiated and proceeded with through negotiations and other modes inland and abroad facilitated and overseen by European countries. Due to unavoidable eruptions affecting the process negotiation came to a standstill. Tamils living in the NorthEast and the Tamils who are abroad as refugees due to horrors of war, hopefully expect to resettle to live and rebuild for their posterity to prosper in their homeland. Hence we urge you as Head of State, wielding wide powers to execute everything necessary in the interest of the nation and peace in the country, to immediately restart negotiations and pay attention to the ISGA proposal and grant the same as a primary stage of final settlement and thereby pave the way for durable peace, says the Union in the memorandum to the President signed by its President S.Kulathevarajah and its Secretary Mr.V.Kuhendran.
