156 schools are defunct in the NorthEast

One hundred and fifty six schools in the NorthEast are totally defunct due to the activities of the Sri Lankan Security Forces. In addition to these defunct schools, there are another one hundred and forty four schools not in full suring as they are displaced and housed in locations away from their own premises, making it inconvenient for the daily scholars who are compelled to walk up and down longer distance than before. This state of schools non-functioning, malfunctioning or short functioning is due to the aggressive occupation of these school buildings by the state security forces.

Some of these schools are closed as they are very badly handicapped due to the "High Security Zone" problems and also due to various military operations in the past. Of the two thousand and eight Tamil schools in the NorthEast Tamil region 156 schools are temporarily closed and 144 are displaced and temporarily functioning in difficult and remote locations.

As statistics of the NorthEast Provincial Education Department shows this is the deplorable state of school education for children in the NorthEast of Sri Lanka. Thirty schools out of the 76 in the Islands under Kayts and Valanai AGA Divisions, 15 out of 21 the schools in a sub division in the Valigamam zone, 15 out of the 80 in the Trincomalee zone, 11 out of the 119 in the Mannar zone, 10 out of the 68 in the Thenmaradchi zone, 5 out the 41 in the Madhu zone and 5 out of the 54 in the Thunukkai zone are totally closed for the time being.
