
Situation Report – 2nd April
Bus bomb kills 15, wounds 20 civilians in AmparaiFifteen civilians were killed and more than 20 wounded when a bomb exploded at the side of a bus when it was stopped at the Sri Lankan military check post at Kon'daivedduvaan, 4 km west of Amparai town today around 12:30 p.m.
Southern construction workers massacred in Batticaloa Six Sinhala construction workers were massacred and one Sinhala and two Tamil workers were seriously wounded by members from the Karuna group. Karuna group with guns entered a Home for Children that was under construction and took the workers at the construction site to a location 200 meters away and shot them. The shooting took place only 300 meters from the Sri Lankan counter-insurgency Special Task Force (STF) camp at Mailampaaveli. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. on 1st April.
The victims were identified as Welage Chandrasiri aged 42, from Kelani, T.M. Dhanapala aged 54, and his 18-years old son Dhanapala Wijetunga from Mahoya, T. Wijakon aged 24, from Mahiyangana and two brothers from Kurunagala, L.M. Dayananda Kapporal aged 33, and Maduranga Kapporal aged 30.
V. U. Nandanage, 41, from Welimada and two Tamils, Indran Pirapaharan and Maduramuththu Nagarasa from Savukkadi were wounded and admitted to Batticaloa hospital. Sri Lankan army destroys Kanchikudichchru tank denying water to Tamil farmers The Kanchikudichcharu camp in Amparai district used to irrigate 1800 acres of paddy land owned by Tamil farmers. Presently the farmers have just completed sowing the fields. On 1 April evening Sri Lankan army deliberately destroyed the damps holding the water in this tank and flooding the fields and settlements near it.
Over and above loss of irrigation for 1800 acres of land and the destruction the tank has denied livelihood for100 families depended on fishing off this tank.
More than 10,000 livestock in the area also depended on the water from the tank. All of these livestock will soon be dead of dehydration.
In total more than 4000 families depended on this tank water for paddy cultivation, drinking water for their livestock and for fishing off the tank.
It is clear that the military will do anything to prevent Tamil people from resettling back in their homes in this very fertile area that is supported by this tank. Body with torture marks, gunshot wounds found in Manthuvil-Jaffna The naked body of a youth, bound in barbed wire, with several gunshot wounds and deep, extensive torture marks, was discovered inside bush jungles in an isolated area near Kerudavil, Manthuvil in Thenmaradchy in Jaffna around 9:00 am on 1st April.
The youth, Mahalingam Thavarajah aged 26, was from Vembadi area, Thunnalai in Vadamaradchy and was living in Meesalai North Kodikamam when he was abducted and killed by the SLA. He was abducted by the SLA along with three other youths in Meesalai. Civilian shot and killed in Thenmaradch-Jaffna A civilian from Kaithady East in Thenmaradchy was abducted by the SLA from his home and shot dead near a cemetery in Kaithady at 5:30 p.m. on 1st April.
The victim was identified as Kanapathi Sivarajah aged 35, a day laborer who earned a meager living doing manual work to support his family. Three youths went missing in Kolumbuthurai-Jaffna A student went missing in Kolumputhurai, Jaffna on 30th March. Jeya Jeyathileepan aged 20 went to the nearby shop around 6.00pm and went missing.
Two youths were abducted by the SLA in Kachchai road Kodikamam on 31st March.
Mayilvakanam Sayinthan aged 28 and Gnanamakarasa Vasanthan aged 24 from Ketpali were abducted by the SLA while they were on their way to home from Kodikamam. Youths attacked by SLAin Meesalai - Jaffna Four youths arrested in Meesalai by the SLA were brought to Seelan Poonka junction and severely beaten by the SLA. Civilians who went to the site were chased away by the SLA and four youths have been taken to the SLA camp.
On of the youth has been killed and dumped in Manthuvil near Kerudavil by the SLA. Two civilians shot dead in Vavuniya SLA and paramilitary shot and killed two men and dumped their bodies in Thirunavatkulam area in Vavuniya at 7:00 p.m on 1st April.
The victims were identified as Kulasekaranathan Soumian aged 32, and Yogarajan Baheerathan aged 27. Two civilians injured in Trincomalee Two civilians seriously injured in the shooting of the SLA in old Moor Street in Trincomalee around 7.20pm on 31st March. One of the victims has been identified as Shanthi Sivamokan aged 32. The victims have been admitted in the hospital. Houses damaged in Air strike Sri Lankan Air Force bombed civilian settlements in Iyakkachchi on 31st March. Since the civilians of the area displaced in last August there was no civilian casualties.
More than 12 houses were damaged in the airstrike.
