12,000 Jaffna-Northewest school students boycott classes for the third day
Protesting the disappearance of three of their fellow students and torture of others, after arrest by the Sri Lankan military, more than 12,000 students from schools in the northwest region of Jaffna are boycotting their classes for the third day in succession. One of the Zonal Education Directors in Jaffna said that 100% of the students are boycotting classes indicating the level of feeling among the students.
Muruhananthan Paramananthan, an Advanced Level student from Hartley College in Point Pedro disappeared on 15 January 2007 after abduction by the Sri Lankan military. Paramsothy Thananchayan, another Advanced Level student was disappeared from Point Pedro by the Point Pedro Sri Lankan military intelligence wing. Kandaih Latheeswaran another Advanced Level student from Vaddukoddai was disappeared by the Sri Lankan military. Another Advanced Level student was arrested and later left with severe torture injuries in front of his home. The boycotting school students are demanding security and safety in order to attend school without fear. No one in Jaffna is ready to openly discuss the abduction of school students out of fear for their own lives. All the parents have lodged complaints of disappearance at the Jaffna branch of the Human Rights Commission. Parents whose children were tortured and released would rather keep silent grateful that their child was returned alive even if they suffer severe torture injuries.
