"Norway's role is vital and it should continue"

- Tamilselvan in Kilinochchi

Norway's special peace envoy Erik Solheim and H.E. the Ambassador Hans Bratskar met with Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan, Head of the LTTE Political Wing today 3rd May 2004 at the Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi.

Mr. Erik Soilheim briefed Mr. Tamilselvan on the outcome of the meeting with H.E. the President of Sri Lanka yesterday. Explaining in detail Mr. Solheim said that the President is fully committed to the peace process and upholding the integrity of the CFA, conscious of the political reality vis-à-vis the Tamil mandate in the general election.

Responding to Mr. Solheim, the Political Head emphasized the moral responsibility of the LTTE in taking forward the Tamil mandate to work for the institutionalizing of the Interim Self Governing Authority and work towards a lasting negotiated settlement. Confirming the LTTE's commitment to the peace process and the CFA Mr. Tamilselvan said that "Norway's role is vital and it should continue". He also expressed concern over the unfortunate incidents that have taken place in Batticaloa-Amparai wherein LTTE members were killed under suspicious circumstances.

Mr. Tamilselvan reiterated that the President and her team should work hard to remove any sense of suspicion they have towards the intentions of the LTTE and refrain from any involvement with Karuna or his men, for Karuna is now a fugitive having committed murders, immoral acts and fraudulent practices. SLA, if it harbours Karuna and his men, will be only jeopardizing the peace process, said Mr. Tamilselvan. Concluding his remarks, Mr. Tamilselvan said that the final details of the President's message would be conveyed to the National Leader for final ratification on getting responses to the various clarifications sought during the discussions.

Mr. Erik Solheim undertook to convey the sentiments expressed by Mr. Tamilselvan to the President and on reaching an agreeable position regarding an agenda for the recommencement of negotiations, having in mind the ISGA as the basis for any development projects, will convey it to Kilinochchi for future moves.

Associated with Mr. Erik Solheim and the Ambassador was Ms. Kjersti Thomsdal, Second Secretary of the Norwegian Embassy in Colombo.
