Dr. Anton Balasingam Returns to Vanni
Dr. Anton Balasingam, political theoretician and advisor to the LTTE, and Mrs. Adele Balasingam arrived back in Vanni this morning. Having arrived in Colombo from London, they were flown to Vanni in a Sri Lanka Air Force helicopter. Dr. and Mrs. Balasingam were warmly welcomed by senior members of the LTTE, commanders, cadres and numerous members of the public.
Dr. Balasingam will meet LTTE leader Mr. V. Pirapaharan and discuss the letter of response from Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mr. R. Wickremasinghe following the withdrawal of the LTTE from the peace talks pending implementation of agreements reached to date. It is expected that the Japanese Special Envoy Mr. Akashi will be meeting with Mr. V. Pirapaharan and Dr. Balasingam on 7th May 2003.
Dr. Balasingam's meeting with the LTTE leadership and meetings between the LTTE leadership and visiting envoys and other diplomats are assuming great significance with the Tokyo Donor Conference fast approaching and LTTE's decision not to attend this meeting.
