Two killed and 11 injured in Mullaithivu by Sri Lankan air force aerial attack
On 11 July at 3.30pm, Sri Lanka Kfir bombers dropped bombs over the shores of the Alampil fishing village in Mullaithivu killing two civilians including a child and injured a further 11 civilians including five children.
The bombs were dropped just 300 meters from the shore where the fisher folks were preparing for the daily fishing. This fishing village is made up of long term refugees who displaced from Mayiliddy in Jaffna in 1990 when their land was confiscated by the Sri Lankan military for military purposes. In 1995 they displaced again by military operations and this time settled in Alampil. Many members of this village were killed in the December 2004 tsunami and they settled slightly further inland after this.
Fishermen from this village have been subjected to attacks by the Sri Lankan Navy for several days. Even the fishermen who have restricted themselves to fish with 500 meters of the coastline have been attacked. Nearly 5000 fishing families have been effected by these attacks because they have stopped fishing due to fear caused by these constant attacks. Fishing is the sole income of these families. Without it these families are unable to meet even their very basis necessities.
It is worth noting that just a few days before this attack, the president of the fishermen’s union for Mullaithivu appealed to the Government Agent of Mullaithivu to provide 5000 fishing families in this area with relief to satisfy their basic needs because they were unable to go out to sea.
