Shelling from Manalaru Sri Lanka military camp kills a woman

A 57 year old woman from Thamaraikerni in Kumulmunai in Mullaithivu district was killed instantly by shells fired by the Sri Lanka military on Saturday 26 April at 11.30am.

The Sri Lanka military stationed in its Manalaru camp fired shells indiscriminately into the civilian areas in Kumulamunai, Arumuhathankulam and Nayaru around 11.30am yesterday. A man was also injured and is admitted to the hospital.

Yogarasa Modchanathaluxmi aged 57 was sitting in the back verandah of her house when a shell fell and exploded in front of her severing her neck, killing her on the spot. T Kumarasamy aged 56 not from the same home was injured and admitted to the hospital.

The shells fell over a large area of civilian space. Large number homes were damaged in this heavy and indiscriminate shelling by the Sri Lanka military.

Shells fell in the Katpahapillaiyar temple area and near the Kumulamunai MV school. Farmers busy in their fields in the Arumuhathankulam and Thannimurippu area readying for the rice growing season escaped injuries though shells fell in the fields they were working. Road maintenance workers on the Thaneeruttu road also escaped injuries though shells fell very near them.

Many trees were also destroyed in this shelling.
