Baby killed, Mullaithivu GA among the injured in the SLA midnight shelling

Indiscriminate and widespread shelling by the SLA at 1.00am last night left a baby dead and 16 people injured. Shells fell inside the Mullaithivu hospital, GA’s residence and doctor’s quarters and adjacent villages within a 10 kilometre radius.

An 18 month old baby, Jeyan Sankeerthana, was killed on the spot and among the 18 injured are Mullaithivu Government Agent, Ms Emelda Sukumar, and Ms Renuka, wife of Dr Shanugarajan the Medical Superindent of Mulliathivu hospital. Also among the injured are two more children, Vijayakanth Began aged 3 and Vijayakanth Arelili aged 5 who are siblings.

Injured Mullaithivu GA told media that shells fell all around her quarters and the hospital complex next to her quarters. She added that she was thrown off her bed and was injured by shell shrapnel.

The Medical Chief of the Mullaithivu hospital said shells fell all around the hospital complex and his own quarters sustained serious damages. His wife was also injured and his three children aged 7-0 were suffering due to shock. The nurses’ hostel window glasses were also shattered due to the shells that fell and exploded near it he added. He expressed frustration that his hospital already working under severe restriction on medicine and fuel; and suffering shortages of medical staff is callously being put through such turmoil.

A well in one house that was giving water to 10 IDP families was also destroyed.

Shells fell and exploded in the villages of Neeravipiddi, Uduppukulam, Kumarapuram and Thanneeruttu, surrounding the Mullaithivu hospital. Shelling and bombing along the eastern coast day before yesterday also caused widespread damages and injuries to civilians.
