
Six civilians killed in Jaffna in indiscriminate Sri Lanka military shelling
Six civilians were killed and a further 13 were injured in Jaffna, in the early hours of yesterday, Wednesday 29 May, in the indiscriminate retaliatory artillery fire by the Sri Lanka military following the LTTE Sea Tiger attack on a Sri Lankan Naval installation in Chiruthivu, a small islet off Jaffna Peninsula.
The civilians were killed and injured in the coastal villages of Columbuthurai, Kurunagar and Pasaiyour. Several shells fell in these villages and exploded in the early hours of yesterday. In Columbuthurai, a mother, Pettison Anatanita aged 40, and their two children, Nirojan, a boy aged 14, and Rohan, a boy aged 11, were killed on the spot and the father, Robert Pettison aged 40, and their nine year old son were injured and admitted to the Jaffna Teaching hospital. The father succumbed to his injuries later. In Kurunagar, a husband and wife, Joseph Francis aged 54 his wife Joseph Francis Sagayarani age 53, were killed on the spot when shells hit their house. Their two children were injured and were admitted to the Jaffna Teaching hospital. Two of the 13 injured people are in critical conditions according to hospital sources.
