Sixth Round of Peace Talks - Hakone, Japan - Day 1
Sixth round of the peace negotiations between the LTTE and Sri Lanka Government began today in the international tourist resort of Hakone, 80km west of Tokyo. Japanese special peace envoy Mr. Yasushi Akashi met with Mr. Anton Balasingam prior to the official opening of the negotiations.
First sitting of the round began at 3.30pm local time and was chaired by the Norwegian deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen. The recent naval incident in which the Sri Lanka Navy attcked and sank a LTTE merchant vessel in international waters, plight of the political prisoners in the southern jails and the resettlement of internally displaced people in the high security zones (HSZ) were the main topics discussed at this sitting. This was contrary to the wider expectation that the details of an acceptable federal constitutional structure would be the thrust of this round of negotiations. The LTTE team comprised of Mr.Anton Balasingam, Mrs.Adele Balasingam, Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan, and Col.Karuna. The Sri Lanka government delegation consisted of Prof.G.L.Peiris, Mr.Milinda Moragoda, Mr.Rauf Hakeem and Mr.Bernard Gunetilleke. Norwegian facilitators also participated in the meeting.
