Destroying Maveerar cemetery – an established tradition of Sri Lankan military

Yesterday, Sri Lankan military using heavy earth moving equipment destroyed the Kandaly Maveerar cemetery (War Heroes’ Cemetery) in Vaharai as a mark of their “victory”.

International civilized norms dictates that war prisoners, war wounded, and war memorials be respected which ever side it belongs to.

LTTE war heroes’ cemetery, also referred to as Maveerar cemetery, has become a very special icon for the Tamils. Families of the dead regularly visit the place to communion with their dead family members.

The destruction of the cemetery much be seen as part of the on going cultural genocide program of the GoSL.

The destruction of the Kandalady cemetery in Vaharai is only the last of the long list of cemeteries destroyed by “victorious” Sri Lankan military.

The Kopay - Jaffna Maveerar cemetery was flattened with tractors in 1995.

The Kodigamam - Jaffna Maveerar cemetery was flattened with tractors 1996

The Ellankulam –Vadamaradchi - Jaffna was destroyed in 1996

The Velanai-Chaaddi - Jaffna was destroyed 1995

The Alankernikulam – Sampur - Trincomalee was destroyed 2006

The Kanchikudichcharu - Amparai was destroyed in 2007

Those cemeteries flattened in 1995-1996 were rebuilt after signing the CFA. During the last year they were again repeatedly attacked and damaged. Other memorials erected for the highly respected war dead are also being continuously destroyed by the Sri Lankan military.
