
SLA forcefully enters Jaffna University campus, attacks the students
Sri Lankan military forcefully entered the Jaffna University premises, opened fire and severely attacked the students around 10.00 am day before yesterday, 30 September 2007.
Nearly one thousand Arts faculty students were gathered in the Kailasapathi Cultural Hall in the Jaffna University for a meeting on that day. When the meeting was about to start, large number of Sri Lankan military in armored vehicles forcefully entered the university premises and randomly opened fire and attacked the students. Head of the Jaffna university student union said, “the Sri Lankan military’s act of violence against the students was intended to stop our meeting. However, the Military in an attempt to justify its violence accused that a student opened fire on their check post near the university complex. But there was no such shooting incident.” One student was injured in the random shooting by the Sri Lankan military. Students in Jaffna peninsula especially university students are under threats by the Sri Lankan military operated forces. Many students were also killed and disappeared at the hand of this forces. This is not the first time for the university students faced Sri Lankan military violence in the university complex. A year ago, the university was kept closed following similar threats from the Sri Lankan military.
