News of the plight of IDPs and shortages of some essential items is dominating the news and conversations in the Vanni.
The District Secretariats of both Mullaithivu and Kilinochchi are struggling to cope with the growing numbers of IDPs. At a meeting organized by the Mullaithivu Distrtrict Secretarit to discuss the IDP situation, appeals were made to both local and international agencies to come forward to alleviate the miseries of the IDPs.
The latest theatre of displacement is taking place in Mulankavil due to widespread shelling by the Sri Lanka military. Mulankavil MV School, many of the Multi Purpose Co-operative Society (MPCS) stores, and many private medical clinics there have displaced with the people.
In the meantime widespread thefts of the possessions of the IDPs that they left behind in their homes are also being reported adding to the woes of the IDPs.
Vanni is also presently facing severe shortage of kerosene, sugar and washing soap. The shortages are created by the Sri Lanka military limiting the number of Lorries permitted to enter Vanni at the Omanthai checkpoint. As a result long queues of people waiting to buy small quantities of rationed kerosene, sugar and sunlight soap can also be seen in Vanni.
