Ananthapuram GTM School surroundings bombed
Sri Lankan Air Force carried out extensive bombings in the surroundings of the Ananthapuram GTM School in Puthukkudyiruppu around 1.15pm on Saturday, 7 June. The school building sustained some damages. Three homes in the surroundings were destroyed.
The principal of the school, S Kanagaratnam said.
“Around 1.15pm surroundings of our school was bombed. It was Saturday and extra classes were being held in the school. When bombers started circling, we all fell to the ground face down. Shrapnel from the bombs and stones were strewn all over the school ground after the bombs exploded. Principal’s office window glasses were shattered. Some roof tiles were also shattered. After the bombers had left and students started to move we found some young students struggling with chest pain and were nearly fainting. They recovered after some first aid. On the following Monday the attendance at our school was extremely poor. Our school has a roll of 250 students and on Monday only 25 students came to school.” This response of the students to an aerial bombardment near their school has become a typical scenario that has been experienced by many of schools in the Vanni area.
