JVP may bypass President who made them partners in government

"It is President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga who accommodated the JVP which was at one time an armed insurrection group and an identified Tamil hatred mongering entity, as partners in the government and now it appears that the same JVP may bypass the President herself", said Mr. S.P.Tamilselvan, Head of the LTTE Political Wing in an exclusive interview to "Uthayan" the Jaffna based Tamil Daily yesterday 9th August 2004.

Mr. Tamilselvan said this when asked whether there is a likelihood of JVP coming to power in the future. He further said that the general assessment is that the JVP by itself may form a government in the future. And it is the President who upgraded the JVP as a ruling partner and therefore she is responsible for this.

When asked about the news that the government is formulating counter proposals for LTTE's draft proposal for ISGA, Mr. Tamilselvan said that the ISGA proposals have been formulated on the basis of Tamil people's aspirations and that the LTTE will recommence negotiations on the basis of their proposals. "There have been no changes in the position from the beginning" continued Mr. Tamilselvan.

Responding to a question on the LTTE view relating to the frequent visits of US military officials to Jaffna, Mr. Tamilselvan said that this has created a sense of panic and the people are beginning to get perturbed over an impending war. He emphasised that these visits definitely tend to make the people suspicious of the government's sincerity of purpose in the peace process. These actions, he said, are indicators that point to a repetition of the government's hitherto adhered militaristic means of resolving the Tamil national problem. Commenting further Mr. Tamilselvan said that the visits of the US officials and the fortification of the military complexes have given rise to large scale public protests in the military occupied areas.
