
Sinhalese mobs kill Tamil civilians and destroy properties at Veerapuram in Vavuniya
Two civilians were killed and many injured including women, children and elders by the Sri Lankan Home guards and Sinhalese mobs at Veerapuram in Vavuniya on 20th August 2007.
Former head of Veerapuram Rural Development Society Arumugam Nagalingam aged 55 was shot and killed at his house by the Sri Lankan home guards. Sri Lankan Transport Board driver Senthilnathan aged 35 also shot and killed by the Sinhalese mobs where the incident took place. Civilians’ properties were looted and destroyed by the Sinhalese mobs. Sri Lankan Armed Forces have attacked and looted Cheddikulam and Veerapuram areas several times in the recent past. People, who rely on day-to-day earning for their livelihood, have been displacing gradually from these areas in fear of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces attacks. Two fishermen went missing in Vadamaradchi east Two fishermen from Vaththirayan, Vadamaradchi east went missing on 20th August when they went for fishing.
Sepastian Kristine Lenard, a father of two children of Nagarkovil and Sivanathan Rajkumar, father of 3 children went missing. Neither their boats nor their fishing nets were found so far by the relatives who went searching for the missing fishermen. Most of the families were forced to flee their homes in the coastal villages of Vadamaraadchi east due to the Artillery attacks by SLA from August last year.
However, a few fishermen families continue to remain in the villages of Maruthangkerni, Vaththiraayan and Uduththurai to earn a living. SLA from Nagarkovil continued multi barrel rocket attacks towards Vadamaradchi east areas for last two days. There were no civilian casualties in these attacks since people have already fled the areas. Houses and buildings were destroyed by the attack. Ambulance for Nedunkerni hospital blocked by the MOD An ambulance provided by the UNICEF to Nedunkerni hospital was blocked by the Defence Ministry of the Government of Sri Lanka. Nedunkerni hospital has been functioning without an ambulance for more than a year. A year ago, Deep Penetration Unit of the Government of Sri Lanka targeted Nedunkerni hospital ambulance which was carrying patients, nurses and doctors towards
Puthukudiyiruppu hospital. Six people including a patient, a doctor, a nurse and the driver were killed in this attack and the ambulance was completely damaged. Civilians face difficulties without an ambulance to take the patients to Puthukudiyiruppu or Vavuniya hospital.
Now Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence has blocked taking the ambulance which was given by the UNICEF to Nedunkerni hospital.
