Confrontational attitudes of SL military

LTTE female cadres insisted on to remove waist belts

Fifty LTTE members including 20 females who were traveling from Batticaloa to Vanni were held up at military check point at Koduvamadu Bridge in Senkaladi, Batticaloa. The Captain in charge of the military complex insisted in the LTTE female cadres removing their waist belts, alleging that it is part of a military uniform.

It was pointed out by the Head of the group that the civilian dress code of the LTTE female cadres consist of a trouser, shirt and a waist belt and therefore the waist belt does not constitute part of a military uniform but the military captain adamantly refused to accept the explanation and resultantly the trip which was scheduled with the accompaniment of the SLMM from this military point to Omanthai had to be cancelled.

LTTE female cadres who are engaged in political work in the military occupied area have been wearing this civilian dress with waist belt as a part of it since signing of the CFA. There were a couple of instances, one in Manipay Jaffna and the other one in Vavuniya wherein the SL military arbitrarily prevailed in the cadres to remove waist belt and the issue was later resolved with the intervention of the SLMM and the female cadres continue the practice since then.

The latest incident at Koduvamadu, Senkaladi is an entirely new development which has been brought to the notice of the SLMM by Mr. Kausalyan, Head of the Political Division Batticaloa, Amparai for resolution.

In another incident in Mahinthapura, Trincomalee Mr. Elilan, Head of the Trincomalee political division and other members who were proceeding to the flood affected villages in the Eachchilampattai division administered by the LTTE to make relief arrangements for the flood victims, were denied access by the military personnel. It is only after delaying them for two hours that contacts were made with higher authorities, the group was allowed to travel.

Head of the Trincomalee Political Division Mr. Elilan said that hardening attitude of the military in spite of frequent meetings of the LTTE with the SLA is a matter for regret and continued that he intends raising this matter with the SLMM.
