“Suggestion to give up claim for separate state should accompany a viable alternative”

V.T. Tamilmaran

“Those who suggest that the Liberation Tigers should give up their struggle for a separate state, have to first place before the Tamil people a viable alternative in lieu of” said Mr. V.T. Tamilmaran, Lecturer, Legal studies of Colombo University responding to a question from Indian journalist and researcher Narayanasamy.

The occasion was a confab of South Asian independent media held in Colombo during the last two days. Mr. Narayanasamy raised a question whether Tiger Leader Mr. Prabaharan is prepared to give up his struggle for an independent state. Mr. V. T. Tamilmaran responding to the question said that before raising a question as to whether the Tiger Leader is prepared to give up the claim for an independent state, one should examine whether there is in place any assurance or guarantee from Colombo to resolve the Tamil national problem.

Elaborating on it Mr. Tamilmaran said that Colombo has no assurance or guarantee and is in no mind to provide one to the Tamil people relating to the resolution of the national problem. He also said that one has to note the conspicuous absence of consensus among the Colombo polity. Mr. Tamilmaran recalled the immense sacrifice of the Tiger fighters which has earned for them the position as a dominant political force. The government Sri Lanka Mr. Tamilmaran said has the responsibility to recognise this transformation and respond to the Interim Self Governing Authority proposals in a positive manner.
