Five IDPs, including two young children, killed in SLA shelling in Kilinochchi

Sri Lanka military shelling at 4.30pm today, 30 August, killed five IDPs, including two children, displaced from Parappukadanthan in Mannar and staying in Puthumurippu in Kilinochchi, four kilometres from town. Three more people, including two children, were injured by the shelling.

Large numbers of recent IDPs who are staying in this area have put up rudimentary shelters close to each other in empty land. The shell fired by SLA at 4.30pm fell inside one such piece of land where three families have put up small shelters that were just 10 meters apart killing the five people. In fact, international humanitarian agencies have very recently assisted the IDPs here.

The shocked IDP neighbours

Among those killed are two children aged, one month and two years. ICRC visited the location at 5.45pm after the Tamil Eelam police had taken the injured and the dead bodies to the hospital.

The IDPs originally, from Parapukadanthan in Mannar, started their repeated displacements more than a year ago and have displaced several times before ending up in Puthumurippu in Kilinochchi.
