Sri Lankan Security Forces helped and supported Karuna admits Mangala Samaraweera

Sri Lankan Information Minister Mangala Samaraweera in an interview with the BBC on Thursday 24th June admitted that the Sri Lankan Security Forces provided for Karuna's security in Colombo and had been involved in his escape from Batticaloa. He further told that some officers of the Security Forces assisted Karuna to escape to Colombo with their security. They had also earlier helped Karuna to kill some of the LTTE members. Minister Mangala Samaraweera while admitting this involvement of their state security officers in Karuna's treachery against the LTTE leadership, added that only a section of their military officials who were indifferent to achieving peace acted in that manner and that they had done so without the knowledge of the present government.

It is relevant to recall here that the Sri Lankan government had always been maintaining their denial that they did not interfere with Karuna's affairs of the LTTE. Sri Lankan defense secretary Cyril Herath last Monday denied entirely their involvement but even demanded the LTTE to prove such allegations against the government and their security forces. It is now ascertained that along with the security forces Minster of State Douglas Devananda and the Director of Intelligence Kapilakanda Vithane had their shares in this involvement in harbouring Karuna and assisting him.

At this stage of having found out for certain the government officers' involvement with Karuna, possibilities of many more very important persons collaborating with Karuna and working against peace and conflict resolutions, are surfacing to be certainties. It is perhaps to safeguard these VIPs the admissions by Minister Samaraweera has comeforth in the pretext that the government is helpless in respect of the certain sections of the Security Forces who are working against the prospects of peace.

Now, at this time of the report of the Minister's interview with the BBC a statement from Samaraweera's office says that the Minister never said that the Security Officers' involvement with Karuna took place with the blessing of the present government. It is also mentioned in that statement that the state authorities are now inquiring into the possibilities of certain individuals in the Security Forces being involved with Karuna in his activities causing damage to the prospects of peace and national aspirations and principles of the LTTE.
