SLA destroys rice fields irrigated by Kaddukarai tank in Mannar
Farmers from Mannar have sent a written complaint to the Government Agent of Mannar that the rice fields cultivated by them with water from the Kattukarai tank was destroyed by the Sri Lanka military which opened too many sluice gates of this tank thus flooding the rice fields.
Sri Lanka military had opened almost 300 sluice gates of the Kattikarai water tank. The water retained in the tank for long term irrigation uses had been allowed to run waste without control by the action of the Sri Lankan military. Mannar Government Agent acknowledging the complaint from the farmers said that a committee in the Mannar District Secretariat indeed manages the water in the Kattukarai water tank. When he contacted the Sri Lanka military commander for Mannar about its action that is wasting the water in the tank and also destroying the cultivated paddy fields, the Government Agent was told that the Sri Lankan military opened all the sluice gates for security reasons.
