Fishermen jumb from boats swim to safty in Mullaithivi following attacks by the Sri Lankan Navy. Daily cordon and search operations and arrests lead to torture before the arrested are released. Efforts to postpone court cases on disappearences during 1995/1996 from Jaffna to Colombo.
Two fishermen come under attack from SLN in Mullathivu seas Two fishermen from Mullaithivu, Thankavadivel Thevathas, aged 27, and Thangavadivel Sunthararaj aged 29, who were brothers, were at sea fishing at 2.00am in the early morning of 2 June. They came under attacked by two Dvora boats of the Sri Lankan Navy. The frightened fishermen jumped off the boat and swam to safety. On going cordon and search in Jaffna The following areas of Nallur, Kalviyankadhu, and Thirunelveli, in Jaffna, were cordon and searched by the Sri Lankan military at 7.00am on Monday morning. The chosen time for the operation hampered school students and employees going to their respective work places. Such daily cordon, search and arrest operations are terrorizing the people. Many arrested during these operations have been tortured and issued with death threats before they are released. Efforts to transfer hearings on 1995/96 cases of disappearances from Jaffna to Colombo At the hearing in Jaffna, on 2 June, on cases of disappearances in Jaffna during the 1995/96 period, none of the families of the disappeared were present. Neither were one of the accused from the Sri Lankan military side, Corporal Rajapakse who is in prison. The Prison Commissioner sent the message to the courts that Rajapakse could not be produced due to problems of transport. Lawyers representing the other accused from the Sri Lankan Government side, including those for the Jaffna military Commander, Chiefs of military camps, and the Sri Lankan Attorney General, were present at the hearing. The lawyers requested the cases to be postponed until the hearing on their application for transferring the cases from Jaffna to Colombo has been heard. Accordingly the cases were postponed to 29 August by the presiding Judge, Vignarajah.
