'Pomgu Thamil' attended by unprecedented numbers overwhelmed with emotions

An upsurge of Tamils in Batticaloa

Pongu Thamil celebrating the present day resurgence among Tamils in a bid to recover the lost national privileges took place in the Eastern University Campus at Vantharumoolai in Batticaloa. A very large gathering estimated to number over 75,000 attended. "Ours is the Land of the brave, a great base for victories" has been the thematic slogan of the upsurge with great sentiments expressed in overwhelming emotions.

Almost all the streets and highways in the districts of Batticaloa and Ampara were colourfully decorated. All entrances to towns were marked with arcs of welcome and important locations were conspicuous with flags flying on tall masts in red and yellow. Banners with slogans and colourful decorations were all over the towns and suburbs especially on the frontage of residential and commercial premises.

The proceedings at a mass rally that took place in the Eastern University Grounds were the consummation of the series of Pongu Thamil celebrations of the day and they were presided over by the Eastern University Students Union President Mr. Arulanantharajah. The common torch of the dedicated was lit by Martyr Lt. Col. Joi/ Visalagan's mother for the proceedings to commence. The LTTE Education Unit Head Mr. Varathan hoisted Tamil Eelam National Flag. Following the hoisting of the flag two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect for the martyrs. Tamil Varzhthu, words of blessing by the heads of religious denominations and words of welcome took place followed by the President of the rally Mr. Arulanantharajah speaking.

Minister Chandrasekaran and Members of Parliament Joseph Pararajasingam, Sivajilingam, Ariyanayagam Chandranehru, G. Krishnapillai and Mano Ganesan, Mr. Athaudahetti, Secretary to the Prime minister, Policy Planning Consultant Alizhahir Moulana were besides the prominent citizens who spoke. Batticaloa and Ampara Special Commandant Ramesh delivered the keynote address on behalf of the LTTE. Following his speech a special declaration was unanimously made.
