
Woman takes poison fearing sexual harassment by SLA
A woman drinks poison after ordered to as SLA camp for investigation.
Ponnampalam Puvaneswary aged 44, mother of three children, was ordered by the SLA on 20 July to report alone to their camp. Due to the prevailing fear among women caused by several incidents of sexual harassment by SLA, she took poison with the intention of committing suicide rather than having to go to an Sri Lanka army camp alone. Puvaneswary has been admitted to Batticaloa hospital. She lives in Ward 9, Kokkaddicholai. Mother and baby injured in SLA shellingSLA carried out intensive shelling from its Mannar positions into heavily populated LTTE areas. 33 year old teacher and her 11 month old baby were critically injured. Anistan Sahayamma aged 33, a teacher at Alankulam government Tamil mixed school, and her 11 month old baby Anistan Karmithan are the injured victims. The baby is in a critical condition according to Pallamadu hospital sources in Mannar. During the shelling, civilians were forced to run scattering in all directions. The shelling continued until mid day yesterday.
