Karuna has been discharged from the LTTE and relieved of his responsibilitiesToday the 6th March 2004, at 10.20am a Press Conference was held at the LTTE Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi. In which Mr. S. P. Tamilselvan, Head of the Political Wing of the LTTE along with Mr. Ramesh, Special Commander Batticaloa-Amparai District, Mr. Ram, Commander, Batticaloa-Amparai District, Mr. Praba, Deputy Commander Batticaloa-Amparai District, Mr. Gihaththan, Commander, Jeyanthan Special Regiment, Mr. Ramanan, Head of the Military Intelligence Wing and Mr. Kausalyan, Political Head of the Batticaloa-Amparai District were present.
They, not only presented the National Leader's decision but also answered questions put to them by the journalists. Media briefing at the Peace Secretariat on Karuna's removal from the LTTE: In a media briefing convened to announce the removal of Mr. Karuna from the LTTE, Mr. Tamilselvan announced the purpose and the presence of Batticaloa-Amparai newly appointed Special Commander, Commanders, Political Heads and cadres.
In responding to questions relating to the background in which Karuna acted in this manner the newly appointed Special commander Mr. Ramesh said that it was a decision of a single individual which has not been accepted by his deputies, cadres and the people as a whole. He also said that the allegations supposed to have been leveled in Karuna's letter to the National Leader that the North dominates over the East and developments have taken place in North ignoring the East are wrong and cited Karuna's interview a few days ago to a Tamil media that no development whatsoever has taken place in the entire NorthEast. Responding to allegations that the leadership wanted a fighting force sent from the East to North Commander Ramesh said that there was no necessity for cadres to move from the East since there is no war at this time. Answering a question relating to all important positions being held by northerners the Commander said that the top most hierarchical position in the LTTE Head Office from where all instructions flow downwards is being held by Mr. Puthiyavan, a cadre from Batticaloa. He also said that Karuna while commanding operations against the military in the Vanni, was almost considered second in command to the Leader and this was the most coveted position anybody could hold. When questions were asked about political assassinations in Batticaloa and Karuna's linking up these to the LTTE's intelligence head Mr. Ramesh said that they on the ground were very vigilant as much as possible to detect the elements behind these killings since the National Leader has given clear instructions to ensure a violence-free environment for elections. Karuna, he said was fully briefed on these mysterious killings and it is now shocking to find that he has invented an imaginary culprit. Mr. Tamilselvan when asked to express his feelings about the action taken by the Leadership in discharging Karuna from the LTTE, said that it is only a clear indicator of the discipline maintained in the organization and the commitment with which the leadership takes decisions in the context of the supreme sacrifice of 18,000 youths and 80, 000 civilians and the immense sufferings undergone by the Tamil people. With pointed reference to the contradictions in Karuna's much publicized 'open' letter and the media interviews Mr. Tamilselvan said that this is a clear message to the people of Batticaloa-Amparai and requested them to be calm, not getting confused with rumors. He also said that the commitment of the National Leader and the movement as a whole is for the liberation of the Tamil people as one entity and not divided as people of Batticaloa and Jaffna. Mr. Tamilselvan when asked about the elections in Tamil areas and the possible impact that Karuna's removal would have on the peace process said that the Tamil people who have been denied their democratic rights for such a long time should be provided with this opportunity to exercise their franchise irrespective of where they live. Continuing further he said that the international community has a major role to play in facilitating the Tamil people to participate in the polls. He further said that a single individual's lapse and the disciplinary action in removing him from the organization, will definitely not affect the peace process in anyway. The press release is as follows: Head Quarters, Mr. Karuna who was Commander, Batticaloa-Amparai, instigated by some malicious elements opposed to the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle, acting traitorously to the Tamil people and the Tamil Eelam National Leadership, has planned to secede himself from the liberation organization. The Commanders, Divisional Heads and cadres under him, unable to acquiesce with this traitorous act, have refused to comply with his orders and met with the National Leadership, explaining the ground reality prevailing there. In accordance with this, Karuna has been discharged from the Liberation Tigers organization and relieved of his responsibilities. The Tamil Eelam National Leadership has since appointed Mr. Ramesh as Special Commander, Mr. Ram as Commander, Mr. Praba as Deputy Commander and Mr. Kausalyan as Political Head of the Batticaloa-Amparai District. It is hereby informed that these officials will assume their positions and functions as the official representatives of our organization.
