Tension increases in JaffnaPeople of Jaffna Peninsula observed Hartal today, in protest against the killing of two youths, who were participating in a football game in the Valvettithurai Sithampara College grounds around 6.00 pm on the 19th November 2004.
The Hartal was observed well all over the Jaffna peninsula with the closure of shops and roads and as a consequence the most areas in the Peninsula was deserted. People protested against the SLA in various places in the peninsula and there were clashes in about ten places including Meesalai, Valvettithurai, Pointpedro and Chavakachcheri between the army, police and the public. The people demonstrated by placing road blocks and burning tires. A youth identified as Manikkam Sundram got injured when Army and Police opened fire.
