Attacks in Trincomalee escalates

The night following the above shooting a vehicle belonging to TRO that was transporting gravel was beaten to pieces by thugs. The driver of the TRO vehicle was also severely attacked. All documents and permits belonging to the driver were taken away from him and he was chased away.

From Saturday morning, thugs have continued to harass and attack Tamil people living in the area. Tamil travellers passing through the area and personnel of Non Governmental organizations are also being attacked.

On Saturday morning a TRO vehicle transporting motorboats for tsunami relief was burned down. All the motorboats in the vehicle were also burned. A private vehicle transporting palm stems used for fencing was also set alight.

The SLMM vehicle that arrived at the scene to observe the incidents was also attacked and broken. The police stationed in the area and observing the incidents acted only when the SLMM vehicle was attacked. The police removed the SLMM personnel to safety.

Thugs continue to attack the Tamil people in the area. Trincomalee area political section head Mr S Elilan has lodged a complaint with the SLMM about the events. In his complaint Elilan has stated that the current attacks on Tamils by the thugs are only the next phase of the continuing provocations and attacks on Tamil people in Trincomalee.
