SLMM insists SLA-paramilitary groups disarm in Srilankan government-controlled areas
The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) issued a firm statement insisting that Sri Lankan Army (SLA) paramilitary groups disarm in government-controlled areas.
SLMM spokesperson, Helen Olaffsdottir, stated that paramilitary groups which work with the SLA violate the ceasefire agreement and this country’s laws. Olaffsdottir also added the government is responsible of protection and defense in the government-controlled areas and the LTTE is responsible for protection and defense in the LTTE-controlled areas. According to Article 1.8 of the ceasefire agreement, all paramilitary groups should have disarmed within 30 days of signing of the agreement. However, paramilitary groups continue to threaten the lives of people living in Eastern Sri Lanka as well as the country as a whole. Peoples Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) and the European Union (EU) have issued warnings for paramilitary groups not to disrupt the 17 November elections. The SLMM is now sending this message to the Sri Lankan government as well.
