Government is not interested in peace

it is working towards war – UNP

The government is not keen on taking the peace efforts forward. Rather all its actions show that it is working towards war. This has outraged the LTTE and has created the opportunity for launching of war – UNP has levelled these serious charges against the government.

UNP asks how a president who cannot resolve a simple issue about a Buddha statue can resolve the ethnic problem of the country. UNP member of parliament for Kaluthurai, Dr Ranjith Senaratne, said this at the UNP press conference held on Thursday at the office of the opposition leader.

Dr Ranjith Senaratne said this in answer to questions raised by Tamil journalists. He went on to say that neither the President nor her ministers are interested in the peace efforts. Every one of them is immersed in resolving their own issues. President is worried about holding on to her position for another year. Mr Mangala Samaraweera, marginalized by the president, is involved in setting up another coalition with the JVP. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse is working to get support for his candidacy to be the next president with help from his mate Mr Mangala Smamaweera.

None of them are interested in the country or the people. Every action taken by the president is encouraging the resumption of war.

As the president of the country she could have resolved the Trincomalee Buddha statue issue. But she could not do even that.

It was the UNP government that signed the ceasefire agreement and put the foundation for bringing permanent peace to the country. But the government has now forgotten the peace talks. Now the country is in dire situation said Dr Rajnith Senaratne.
