Protests in Vanni and Jaffna condemning Punanai assassinations

Mass protests against the assassination of and memorial services for late Mr. Kousalyan, the other three LTTE cadres and former parliamentarian A. Chandra Nehru were held throughout Vanni region on Friday. Protest meetings were held from morning in Killinochchi, Tharmapuram, Mulangavil, Paranthan, Akkarayan and Vaddakachchi. All commercial centres were closed and people gathered in large numbers at the meetings. The commercial centres were open only after noon.

In Tharmapuram

Garlanded portraits of Lt.Col. Kousalyan, former parliamentarian A Chandra Nehru, and the three LTTE cadres were taken on a procession to Tharmapuram Mahavidhyalam School accompanied by the music band of girls from Tharmapuram Mahavidhyalayam School. A memorial meeting then took place at the school presided by the Pushparaja, president of the Tharmapuram national uprising society.

Visuvamadu police chief Raguram lit the lamp to open the memorial meeting. Visuvamadu area political section head Ruban raised the national flag. Lamps for the fallen martyrs were lit by Visuvamadu Bishop of Church of South India, P. Thevaraja, temple priest for Puliyampokkanai Nagathambiran temple, Sivaloganatha kurukkal, school principal, Pulokarasa, president of the Visuvamadu commerce union, Gnanam, and secretary of the national uprising society and president of the Killinochchi women’s development group, Mrs. Kasinathan. Speeches in memory of the fallen martyrs were delivered by Sivalokanatha kurukkal, Ruban of the political section and the district education officer. Heads and staff of many NGOs, people’s representatives and general public attended the meeting to remember the fallen martyrs.

In Vaddakachchi

The meeting held in Vaddakachchi was presided by the Vaddakachchi national uprising society secretary S Ponnuthurai. The inaugural lamp was lit by Vaddakachchi Thamileela police chief K. Kingley Thas. The national flag was raised by Vaddakachchi area political section head Cholanilavan.

The lamp for portrait Lt Col Kousalyan was lit by the father of two LTTE martyrs Kandasamy and was garlanded by Killinochchi east rehabilitation organization’s administrative staff Pushpamala.

Lamp for the Portrait of Major Senthamilan’s was lit by Mrs. Lawrence and was garlanded by M. Akilanayakam, principal of Ramanathapuram government mixed school.

Lamp for the portrait of Major Pukalavan was lit by Ranee, secretary of Ramanathapuram national uprising society and was garlanded by Dr Chitra Parameswaran.

Lamp for the portrait of 2nd Lt Nithimaran was lit by Maheswaran, the treasurer of Vaddakachchi commercial union, and was garlanded by Ramajeyan of the political section.

The lamp for the portrait of patriot Chandra Nehru was lit by C Puuniyamoorthy, principal of Ramanathpuram east government mixed school, and was garlanded by Kandeepan of Varuvai region.

Following this the public paid homage with offering of flowers. Speeches were then delivered by K. Rathnakumar, principal of Ramanathapuram Mahavidhyalayam and Cholanilavan, head of Vaddakachchi political section. In his speech Cholanilavan said:

“Our land and people are overwhelmed with grief for we have lost Kousalyan who earnestly dedicated himself to the people of Batticaloa-Amparai who have recently recovered from past traitorous actions. Kousalyan was returning with innovative ideas for rehabilitation of the area after discussions with the political division in Vanni. Our people who are yet to recover from the tsunami tragedy have been pushed into a sea of grief yet again. Our cadres are awaiting orders from our national leader.”

Hartal in Jaffna

Hartal will be held in Jaffna protesting the assassination of Batticaloa-Amparai political section head, Kousalyan, and three other LTTE cadres. The hartal has been called by the Tamil national awareness society and several other civilian organizations.

Tamil national awareness society has called for the cooperation of all to give a strong message of condemnation of the killing. All commercial centres have been asked to close for the day and fly black flags. It has announced that no transportation services either by the northern transport board or private van service will be operative. It called upon all the employees of government and private sectors to stay away from their work to support the hartal. It also said that there will be no private plane service between Jaffna to Colombo on the day.
