Tamil community leaders and academics from Europe meet with EU representatives
In the TTN interview after the meeting, Mr. Rudrakumar confirmed, “the EU did not place any restriction against LTTE officials from traveling to EU states, however the Government of Sri Lanka and Sinhala medias communicated misleading propaganda that there was a ban on LTTE travel.”
It was clarified that there is a temporary order to avoid official meetings between EU state officials and LTTE officials. Tamil community leaders, including legal expert Mr. V. Rudrakumar and academics from Europe, met with European Union (EU) representatives on October 24 to discuss the supposed ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to travel to EU states. The two and a half hour meeting took place in Brussels, Belgium following a huge gathering of several thousands of people from Tamil communities across Europe. Ten officials participated in the meeting, which included Mr. Rudrakumar, Professor P. Ramasamy, Professor Peter Schalk and Professor Francis. The Tamil Television Network (TTN), based in France, held an interview with Mr. Rudrakumar immediately after the meeting. Tamil officials present at the meeting urged EU representatives to understand that this temporary avoidance will disturb the status of parity between the LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka and only strengthen the position of chauvinistic forces. Tamil officials insisted that there should be no such rulings in the future, to prevent the damages to a presently volatile peace process. Mr. Rudrakumar shared that the EU representatives stated that they give full support to the peace efforts and are concerned for the peace process.
