LTTE declares 26 January as a day of national mourning for Tsunami victims
Press release by the LTTE Political wing regarding observance of the day of mourning on 26 January: Our people suffered untold hardship, destruction and misery and thereby lost all what was positive in their lives during the two decades of war. The ceasefire provided to our people, especially to those living in the seacoast, a chance to begin their lives back with their resilience and thus a semblance of normalcy.
It is under this circumstances that on the 26th of December 2004 that the unprecedented tidal surge attacked the Southeast Asian region including this Island and caused devastation of a vast magnitude. Our brethren living in the Tamil homeland have met with major disaster and loss, which has seriously impacted them. Mother nature’s furry had again made our people homeless, traumatised them with the loss of their loved one and posited them over again in welfare centres and with friends and relatives. In remembrance of the people who lost their lives in the Tamil homeland, other parts of Sri Lanka and all other location in the south Asian region, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam declare 26 January 2005 as a day of national mourning. Let as all share in the grief and bereavement of our brethren who have lost their beloved ones. At that particular moment on this day when our brethren lost their lives by the sudden and ferocious tidal surge, let us all set memorial lights in our homeland and throughout all parts of the world where the Tamil people live.
