Governor of Northeast visits Jaffna in the midst of heavy protest.
Tyronne Fernando, Governor of NorthEast, visited Jaffna Thursday with heavy police guard while hundreds of people protested his visit.
The Governor arrived at the Palali airport on Thursday morning and he visited the Jaffna District Secretariat with his secretary, A Amirthalingam, and members of the Ceylon Cricket Board and held discussions with government agent, K Ganesh. From there he went to the Jaffna public library. When people heard that he was visiting the library they gathered with black flags and placards and blocked the entrance to the library. The placards read slogans such as “Do not cheat us with your political stage show”, “We don’t need your visits” and “Get out Governor”. As the protest intensity increased, crowd control police and military were brought to the scene. The situation became tense. Since the protesters were blocking the entrance, the governor was taken with heavy protection through the back door. When the crowd realised this they gathered at the back door and started shouting.
