SLA soldiers attempt rape in Puthur, protestors assaulted
Early this morning, one Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldier, accompanied by two others, broke in and entered a Puthur East village house allegedly attempting to rape one or more of four women who were sleeping. After hearing the women shouting at 3:00 a.m., neighbors rushed to the house and the soldiers escaped.
The SLA soldiers were reported as wearing civilian clothes when the approached the house of Ms. Packyam and her three daughters. Eyewitnesses claimed that the soldiers ran into the SLA’s 511 Division camp. More than 100 villagers, primarily women, began protesting outside of the SLA Division Camp, soon after the incident. A checkpost was burned by a few of the younger protesters and riot police and additional troops were sent to the site. The SLA opened fire and at least six protesters incluing a 60 years old man were wounded. The protesters demanded punishment for the SLA soldiers who violated the women.
The house is located near Annamar Temple. Many villagers have fled the area, in fear of violence triggered by this incident.
