Displaced schools from high security zones lack basic
- government apathetic
Many of schools that are displaced due to the declaration of
high security zones and are functioning in ad hoc locations
lack very basic facilities. Yet, the government is apathetic
about the situation. As a result the displaced schools that
are poorly provided for may have to be closed.
These displaced schools have been running in private lands
for the last 15 years. Classrooms in these schools are just
temporary huts. Government is refusing to fund permanent
buildings because the schools do not have its own land. For example, Vasavilan Mahavidhyalayam displaced from
Valigamam north is presently functioning in a private land
in Urumpirai. Classes are run in temporary huts and on mud
floors. The school has more than thousand students, both
boys and girls. Yet the school does not even have basic
toilet facilities or drinking water. Many of the hut roofs
are leaking badly during rain. At the same time other schools are becoming equipped with
computers, science laboratories and other facilities for
learning information technology. As a result students are
gradually moving to these schools that are better equipped.
This is leading to a situation where the displaced schools
that are neglected by the government may have to close down. The education community has issued an appeal to the
government to allow these displaced schools to function in
their own buildings to avoid such an eventuality.
