Trincomalee shuts down protesting the military occupation
Trincomalee’s Tamil speaking people observed a total shut down on Wednesday to protest the occupation of their area by the Sinhala military.
The protest called in the name of the Pongu Tamil society put forward eight demands that included the removal of the Buddha statue established illegally two months ago. All government and local government offices, private offices, banks, Tamil and Muslim shops, local and international NGO offices were all closed for the day. All the schools were closed. Only few shops belonging to the Sinhalese were kept opened. Government owned public transport also did not operate. Only a few private transport service buses belonging to Sinhalese were stationed in the main bus stand. Following this protest massive numbers of military were heaped along the roads.
