Panicky SLA reacts hastily, creating fear in Jaffna and Mannar
The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) has been taking knee-jerk aggressive military actions in dealing with recent incidents in Jaffna and Mannar. People of both areas are expressing fear that the SLA continues to be a threatening presence.
On Thursday evening, the SLA, blindly reacted to a loud noise by opening fire and attacking civilians. It turned out that the loud noise came from a vehicle of the Government’s Electricity Board in which a tire’s tube burst open. The government vehicle was traveling toward Vadamaradchchi from Jaffna town when the tire’s tube burst between the Nelliyadi police station and the EPDP office. People nearby in the Nelliyadi junction tried to desert the area after being frightened, but were confronted with the SLA’s violent attacks with their rifle butts and sticks. After the attacks, people learned that the blast originated from a vehicle’s tire, but the tension remained in the area due to the SLA attacks. Shops in this area closed after the incident. A similar tense situation exists in Mannar following the incident in Pallimunai Sea. The SLA heavily increased the security checking at checkpoints after the incident. People traveling are being stopped for thorough investigations. Public transportation has stopped running and government offices and banks are also closed, as government officials are not going to work.
