Unjust to ask and impossible to be patient anymore

Editorial comment – Eelanadu Tamil Daily

The cruel and cowardly murder of Batticaloa-Amparai political section head Kousalyan, three other LTTE cadres and the former parliamentarian Chandra Nehru has wiped out any remaining traces of hope for peace that peace loving people had in the President.

When this government came to power, all sectors clearly identified it as one that is a coalition of all forces that are against the peace efforts. Before coming to power, the President created the new coalition with the JVP under the name UPFA. It was no secret even then that their main goal was give up the peace talks with LTTE facilitated by Norway and to bring an end to the peace efforts. In deed they pronounced this loud and clear in their campaign speeches. Only when they captured power as a minority government were they forced show a faked interest in peace talks under pressure from international and donor communities. It was not at all difficult for the Tamil speaking people and other peace loving sectors to recognize this facade to be a bible preaching by Satan. Yet, the responsibility to show that the President is not an “angel of peace” but an “evil angel waging war for peace” fell on all the peace loving people. For that reason they were forced to walk the path of peace with no real confidence and in an environment of fear. However, the Punnalai murders have brought the full truth out in the open.

The LTTE has been forced to pay a very heavy price not only to protect the peace but also to unmask the real enemies of peace. Everyone knows the extreme patience LTTE has demonstrated to date. Government, security forces and their quisling groups that are openly calling on the LTTE to continue to exercise patience are expecting the LTTE to tolerate the genocidal behaviour and take it like slaves who must tolerate repeated aggression. It is not possible for Tamils to be silent and scared slaves. They have learnt from past history that such slavish bevaviour will only give the opportunity to chauvinists to wipe them out.

Behind the words of LTTE political wing head S P Thamilselvan who said, “We have been made to face greater upheavals during peace time than during war time.” is a strong message aimed at the international community that is pressuring for peace in the country.

To carry out the ceasefire agreement with a government that violates it in several ways and to conduct peace talks with no confidence leaves the LTTE unable to respond to the expectation of the Tamil people to provide them with a save future. How can it be justified to expect the LTTE to move unarmed in areas where armed enemies and traitors are allowed to move freely.”

It is not reasonable to expect the Tamil people who have paid a huge price to face a war to also show patience to safeguard a ceasefire that not only has failed to give them any benefit but is also taking away so many more lives.
