Youth going fishing killed by the electric fence of Sri Lankan Navy

A youth from the fishing community in Kurunagar in Jaffna was killed at 3.00 a.m. on Saturday morning by the electric fence placed, by Sri Lankan navy, on his way to fishing. There is heightened tension between the people of the area and the navy as a result.

The Sri Lankan navy on the pretext of high security zone occupies the Iranguthurai locality in Kurunagar. The fishing folks are forced to travel through this occupied area on their way to and from fishing everyday.

On Saturday morning Tharman Raja was on his way to the sea when he was electrified and killed by the fence placed by the Sri Lankan navy. People of the area are accusing the navy that the fences were not electrified in the past and it has been electrified deliberately with the intension of killing the fisher folks.

There was already increased tension between the people and the Sri Lankan navy due to the shooting of two youths from this area in Colombo. Death of another youth by the navy’s electric fence has made the people furious.

Representatives of organizations of the fishing community met the Navy and held talks about the death of the youth. They expressed their severe condemnation for placing the wire fences, for electrifying it, and for causing the death of a youth. They have demanded that the family of the youth be given proper compensation.

The organizations in the area are planning a fasting protest on Monday condemning the killing. The protesters will demand that the wire fences along the coast be removed, all military and navy posts along the coastal regions be removed, and fisher folk be allowed to carry out their fishing activity freely.
