
Protesters march against government in Killinochchi and Thenmaradchi/Jaffna
Thousands marched on Tuesday in Killinochchi and Thenmaradcy/Jaffna demanding the government to handover the interim administration to LTTE and stop attacks by the security forces and armed groups on civilians and LTTE cadres.
In Killinochchi marchers started from Kandasamy temple and the Cultural hall and converged in front of the office of the government agent. Protesters were carrying placards and shouting slogans against the government. Members of parliament Eelaventhan and Pathmini Sithamparanathan also took part in the march. A meeting was held at the end of the march in front of the government agent’s office, presided by the president of the consortium of civilian based organizations (CBOs). Parliamentarians Eelaventhan and Pathmini Sithamparanathan spoke at the meeting. Representative of the consortium of CBOs, Manickavasakam, read the memorandum to President Kumaratunge which was then handed to the government agent T.Rasanayakam. Government agent who accepted the memorandum promised to send it to the President immediately and obtain a response from her. Another protest march took place in Thenmaradchy/Jaffna. Marchers gathered at the Chavakachcheri main bus stand and marched through Kandy road and Dutch road and reached the Thenmaradchi District office. There president of the consortium of CBOs in Thenmaradchi handed a memorandum for the President to assistant government agent S.Srinivasan. Memorandums were also handed to assistant government agent, commissioner of North East province and the government agent by representatives of Women’s movement, Fishermen society and the Commerce society. Riot control police and security forces were stationed in the Chavakachcheri town during the march of large crowds.
