“Political contours should not be allowed to fetter Annan’s humanitarian visit to Tamil region”
C.S.I. Archbishop Rt. Rev. S. Jebanesan“UN Secretary General should be allowed unfettered access to any part of the world to provide humanitarian relief and consolation to people in distress, and political contours should not be allowed to fetter his visit to the Tsunami devastated Tamil region in the NorthEast coast” said Rt. Rev. S. Jebanesan , Archbishop, Church of South India (CSI) in a poignant appeal to Mr. Kofi Annan, sent yesterday 8 Jan.

“On an earlier occasion too, a visit planned for the UN Secretary General was cancelled at the last moment due to political pressure. Again now when the Tamil people are in the midst of an unprecedented disaster situation, it is regrettable that his agenda has been tailored in such a way that the Tamil people fear, the Head of the August assembly for peace in this world, would restrict his humanitarian mission to Hambantota and Galle. I have despatched an urgent telegram to the Secretary General to include the Tamil region in his itinerary and stressed therein that it is essential, he meets with the Tamil National leader, for he symbolise the Tamil freedom struggle for justice. I have requested the Secretary General to visit all parts of Sri Lanka affected by the disaster and not to be selective “.
