Tamil patriot murdered in Jaffna
Tamil patriot, Krishnan Navaratnam (51), was shot and killed Thursday at 5:15 am in front of the Thinakural Press office. Mr Navaratnam was picking up the newspapers for delivery, as his part-time job. Police said he was shot by an unidentified gunman, who escaped the scene immediately after the incident. Mr Navaratnam was a member of the Council of Tamil National Resurgence.
Mr Navaratnam has devoted himself to the Tamil national cause since 1985. In the early part of his efforts he was known to always work courageously in dangerous situations during war-time. After the ceasefire was signed in 2002, he returned to Jaffna and was known to be committed in political awareness activities. When the LTTE recently ended its political activities in Jaffna, he worked with people in organizing peaceful demonstration against cruel actions of the Sri Lankan Army (SLA). During this year’s Maveerar Day, he organized several programs in Jaffna during which he received threats from the SLA and paramilitary groups. The LTTE conferred the title of ‘Naddupattaalar’ (Tamil National Patriot) in honor of Mr Navaratnam’s dedicated and courageous efforts for the Tamil people.
