SL Navy bans fishing and reoccupies fishing areas
Fishermen societies in the Chavakachcheri area are accusing the Sri Lankan Navy for expanding the area they are occupying in the sea for shooting exercise thus banning fishing by the fishermen.
During the war the Navy placed total ban on fishing in the lagoon from Thannagkilippu road in Chavakachcheri up to Kachchai. After the ceasefire agreement following strong protest by the fishermen Navy allowed fishing in some limited areas. Navy has now re-introduced the ban for their shooting exercise and will not even permit the fishermen to enter this region. Fishermen who earn their living by fishing in this area are left without their livelihood. Fishermen societies have lodged a complaint with the SLMM.
