PAFFREL warned SLA-backed paramilitary groups not to disrupt presidential election
Peoples Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) issued a stern warning that paramilitary groups backed by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) should not interfere with the 17 November presidential elections. Due to the growing number of violent incidents in the East, a warning was issued to prevent disruptions during the forthcoming elections.
PAFFREL members and LTTE officials met on 30 October. Head of PAFFREL, Kingsley Rodrico, stated that the LTTE has verified that they will not conduct any activity that would disturb the elections. Rodrico also said that the Sri Lanka Election Commission claimed there are 600,000 voters in LTTE-controlled areas. In the meeting, LTTE confirmed there are 300,000 voters in LTTE-controlled areas. LTTE also stated that voters living in LTTE-controlled areas have extreme difficulty traveling to polls because the polls are located 50 km away from their residences.
