“Distinct Tamil identity, lost sovereignty and Traditional Homeland”
Core theme of Vavuniya Tamil Uprising“We, the Tamil people from all parts of Vavuniya, have assembled here today to reconfirm and reiterate the declarations made in the Tamil Uprisings held first here in August and followed up in Batticaloa, Kilinochchi, Mullaittivu, Mannar, Jaffna and Trincomalee” said the convenor of the Tamil Uprising in Vavuniya held in the Urban Council playground yesterday, 27 October 2005.
Tamil Uprisings began in August 2005 consequent to the disappointment and frustration over the unproductive Cease Fire Agreement and the peace talks that ensued. Tamil people living in the Tamil Homeland, both in military occupied areas and liberated areas rose up in unison and conveyed to the international community their plight in a political vacuum. Frustration over the unchanging attitude of Colombo in meeting humanitarian needs and the just political aspirations of the Tamil people even after the expiry of three and a half years of cease-fire and six rounds of peace negotiations is said to be the motivating factor in these uprisings. A clear message has been conveyed to the international community that the Tamil people deserve equality and peace with dignity in this island by virtue of their ancestral homeland and the sovereignty they held prior to colonial invasions.
Over 40,000 people enthusiastically participated in the Uprising. The respective religious heads represented all faiths and the Tamil National Alliance legislators Padmini Sithambaranathan, Sivanathan Kishore, Ariyanenthiran, Shivasakthy Ananthan and Selvam Adaikkalanathan addressed the gathering.
