SLA opens new checkpoints in Trincomalee, arbitrary security checks increase
Affected Student Organization of Trincomalee district has issued a statement against the opening of four new Sri Lankan Army (SLA) checkpoints and its aggressive security checking. Recently, arbitrary and aggressive security checking has increased causing travel problems for students and other residents in the area.
The head of the student group, Kanagasabai Thevakadasam, has faxed a memorandum to President Rajapakse. The statement pointed out that heavy security checking has resumed after a short lull during the time the 2002 ceasefire agreement was signed. It further mentioned that after the President Mahinda Rajapakse was sworn in, four new checkpoints have opened in the central road of Uvarmalai area of Trincomalee. At these checkpoints, vehicles carrying passengers and goods are being stopped and heavily checked, causing serious travel delays on the busy road. A long queue of passenger buses are being held in front of the Hindu Cultural Hall in the inner harbour road, causing travel blockages, which have been making students in the area arrive late to school. This has had a serious detrimental affect on students, as this disturbance is interfering with their education. The student group finally demanded that the new SLA checkpoints be removed, as it has proven to be a strain on all residents, especially the students. A copy of the memorandum was also handed to the head of the Trincomalee district SLMM.
